Finland will build two nuclear reactors to help it become more self-sufficient and cut harmful greenhouse gas emissions, the country’s lawmakers announced.

The Finish parliament has voted in favour of applications submitted by Teollisuuden Voima and Fennovoima for power plants that will generate a total of 3,200MW of energy, reports Bloomberg.

The units will help wean Finland off importing power from Russia, which met up to 15% of Finland’s power needs during the last year.

The projects will also supply cheap energy to industry, which uses more electricity per person than any other EU country.

Fennovoima is reportedly examining two sites in northern Finland for the projects along with its partners E.ON, Rautaruukki and Outokumpu.
