US-based AES Corporation has announced a deal with BG Energy Holdings to acquire Premier Power, owner of the 1,246MW natural gas-fired Ballylumford Power Station in County Antrim, Northern Ireland for £99m.

AES president and chief executive officer Paul Hanrahan said that Ballylumford Power Station will increase AES capacity, while providing important fuel diversification.

The Ballylumford Power Station facility has three power stations including a 600MW C Station with two Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT), a 540MW B Station with three natural gas driven steam turbines and a 106MW plant with two Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) units.

Most of the Ballylumford’s output is supplied to Northern Ireland Electricity.

The acquisition will bring AES’s Northern Ireland operational capacity to 1,868MW.

The transaction is expected to close in second half of the year, subject to regulatory approvals.
