Siemens Energy will design, install and operate a pilot plant for treating a slipstream at the Tampa Electric Big Bend Station to demonstrate its CO2 gas capture technology.
The main aim of the project will be to reduce large amounts of energy traditionally needed to operate carbon capture technologies, the company said in a statement.
The technology will also utilise an amino acid salt formulation as a solvent for CO2 absorption for a more environmentally friendly process.
The new carbon capture demonstration will treat a slipstream of the flue gas from Tampa Electric’s Big Bend Station and capture 90% of its CO2.
Tampa Electric’s coal-fired power plant in Florida has an installed capacity of 1,892MW.
The pilot plant is expected to be in operation in 2013.
