Cogentrix has finalised a solar generating contract with Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo), an Xcel Energy company, to construct the world’s largest solar plant.
The facility will be located on 225 acres of land in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado and will use concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems to produce energy.
The CPV technology, supplied by Amonix, uses optics and a dual-axis tracking system to absorb huge amounts of sunlight onto photovoltaic cells to produce solar energy.
CPV solar is capable of producing 30,000KW of energy, which would provide electricity for 6,500 homes and is designed for utility-scale applications in sunny and dry climates.
Work on the facility is expected to be carried out in the first quarter of 2011 and will begin providing electricity by the second quarter of 2012.
