Gaza City’s sole power plant was shut down recently because of a lack of fuel.
The fuel supply for the plant, supplied by the Palestinian Government in the West Bank, was reduced as Gaza’s Hamas Government fell behind on payments.
Power station official Suheil Skeik told The Associate Press that electricity was cut in Gaza City because there wasn’t enough fuel for the station.
The plant serves Gaza City and its surroundings, while the remaining people in the rest of the tiny coastal territory rely on neighbouring Egypt and Israel for their power needs.
Palestinian Authority spokesman Ghassan Khatib told AP that Hamas isn’t sending enough money and, on average, they were receiving only $1.3m per month from the distribution company, while they were paying $9m for the fuel.
