The Mozambique Government has approved the construction of a $2bn hydropower plant on the Zambezi River.

Mozambique Energy Minister Salvador Namburete told Bloomberg that the facility will generate 1,500MW of electricity.

Mphanda Nkuwa plant will have four turbines, each generating 375MW to be built 60km downstream from the state-owned Cahora Bassa hydropower dam, according to Namburete.

The project will be 40% owned by Camargo Correa Desenvolvimento Imobiliario, 40% by Energia Capital, and 20% by the Mozambique Government.
