US-based Tampa Electric will partner with RTI International to build a pilot project to demonstrate carbon capture technology.
The project will involve technology to remove sulphur and capture, and sequester CO2 from the Tampa Electric Polk Power Station’s 250MW integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) unit.
Under the agreement, RTI will design, construct and operate the pilot plant to capture a portion of the plant’s CO2 emissions to demonstrate the technology.
The plant, designed to capture the CO2 from a 30% side stream of the coal-fired plant’s syngas, will be completed in 2013.
The CO2 capture and sequestration demonstration phase would take place over a one-year period.
The project is expected to sequester about 300,000t of CO2 about 5,000ft below the Polk Power Station in a saline formation.
