The US Environmental Protection Agency has proposed additional pollution controls for the Four Corners Power Plant in New Mexico, US to improve visibility and human health.
The proposal will require plant operators to install the most stringent pollution control technology available for this type of facility to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from about 45,000t per year to 9,000t per year.
EPA’s Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest Region Jared Blumenfeld said the Four Corners Power Plant is the largest source of nitrogen oxides in the nation.
“Adding new pollution controls at this 45-year-old plant will reduce these emissions by 80% — we will all be able to see the results and breathe cleaner, healthier air,” Blumenfeld said.
With the controls, the visibility impact is also expected to reduce by an average of 57% in areas surrounding the plant, including national parks and wilderness.
