Wind energy will contribute about 5 to 22% of world power by 2030, according to a Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Greenpeace report.

Latin American and African countries, along with India and Europe, are shifting towards wind energy, which accounted for about 2.3% of electricity demand this year.

Greenpeace senior energy expert Sven Teske told Reuters that the wind industry was putting up one new wind turbine every 30 minutes, with one in three in China, but the US has lagged in wind energy projects following the economic downturn.

The report recommends that countries must do more to improve electricity grid capacity.
