China’s economic planning body has proposed graduated tariffs on residential electricity use in an effort to save energy, the National Development and Reform Commission said.

Residential power prices are expected to be hiked by CNY0.01 ($0.0015) per kwh if consumption does not exceed 140kwh per month, and by CNY0.05 per kwh for additional power use beyond 140kwh per month.

Also, if the consumption tops 270kwh per month, rates would be charged at CNY0.2 higher than the current uniform price, according to Global Times.

China had been concentrating on electricity reforms since earlier this year.
