Dubai’s energy requirements for the next five years have been met due to sufficient electricity and water, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) director and CEO Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer said.
“At present we have about 2,500MW of additional capacity. We have sufficient resources to provide uninterrupted power and water supply for the next four to five years,” Tayer said.
But, Dubai’s energy requirements are expected to increase by 8% to 9% per annum during the coming years.
Dewa executive vice-president for generation (power and water) Nasser Mohammed Hussain bin Lootah added that solar energy was yet to become economically viable.
“But with technological advancement we should be able to overcome these shortcomings, and we will be incorporating it into the system then,” said Lootah.
Dewa aims to achieve the 2011 target of producing 400MW of additional energy, using more efficient and cost-effective technology, according to Emirates 24/7 News.
