Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City completion date, the first city to be powered entirely by renewable energy, has been postponed.
Construction of the city, which began in early 2008, was due to be completed by 2016 but will now be finished between 2020 and 2025 due to a slow down in the acquisition of tenants, according to Agence France Presse.
The renewable energy enclave, including the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency and the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology campus, will be completed in 2015 as part of phase one.
The driverless electric Personal Rapid Transit vehicles are being tested, and will be completed later this year.
The company also has plans to deploy electric buses and electric taxis for transport in later phases of the city’s development.
