Power and automation group ABB has won orders worth nearly $65m to boost power supplies and strengthen transmission infrastructure in northern Iraq.
Under the contracts from Mass Global Investment, the Swiss group will provide an electrical and automation solution for a new gas-turbine power plant.
The Dohuk 2 power plant, which will have four gas turbines with a capacity of 125MW each, will be an extension of the existing 500MW Dohuk 1 power station built by ABB.
The company will design, supply and install the electrical balance of plant solution.
ABB will also supply products including low and medium-voltage switchgear, a control and automation system, and auxiliary systems for fuel supply and extend a 132 kilovolt (kV) substation to connect the Dohuk 2 power plant to the grid.
The new plant, which will be fuelled by natural gas and light fuel oil, is expected to be operational in ten months.
In seperate project, ABB will supply a 400kV substation and a control system for the grid connection of the 1,000MW Erbil OCGT plant in Iraq.
The power station will be converted to a combined cycle gas turbine plant by extending it with heat recovery steam generators and two steam turbines, the company said.
ABB Power Systems division head Brice Koch said the projects would help Iraq improve the security of the power supply and enhance grid reliability.
"Reinforcement of the power infrastructure will help bring much needed electricity and support economic and social development in the region," Koch added.
