Power and automation group, ABB has secured a $60m contract from Royal Dutch Shell subsidiary Shell Gas Iraq to build a new power plant in Khor Al Zubair in southern Iraq’s Basrah province.
The project is part of an engineering, procurement and construction contract to build a 50MW power plant that will feed electricity to the facilities of the Basrah Gas.
ABB process automation division head Veli-Matti Reinikkala said this project will ensure a stable and reliable power supply to support existing and future infrastructure.
"ABB’s capability to fully execute all aspects of this complex project will help provide the Basrah Gas Company with the electricity it needs to successfully power its complete production process," said Reinikkala.
The company will be responsible for the overall project management, engineering, procurement, construction, supervision, commissioning, start-up and performance.
It will provide process control systems, fire and gas, and emergency shutdown systems, power management systems, step-up and distribution transformers for the project.
The contract also involves the supply of medium and low-voltage power equipment and site utilities, such as a diesel generator, flare control and compressed air system.
The plant is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2013 and will be operated by the Basrah Gas, a proposed joint venture between Iraq-based South Gas (51%), Shell Gas Iraq (44%) and Mitsubishi subsidiary Diamond Gas (5%).
