Power and automation technology group ABB has secured a contract worth $12m from Astana Regionalnaya Elektro Setevaya Companiya (AREK), a utility provider in Kazakhstan.
Under the terms of the deal, the company will provide 18 bays of 110kV and 16 bays of 220kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) systems.
The GIS will form part of Shygys and Dostyk substations, operated by AREK.
ABB Power Products division High Voltage products business head Giandomenico Rivetti said that the new substations would supply power to meet the growing demand for electricity from industrial, commercial and residential customers.
"Our proven GIS technology will play a key role in supporting these substations and helping Kazakhstan build its power infrastructure," said Rivetti.
The substations are expected to come online in June 2013.
