Power and automation group, ABB has secured a $15m order from European utility Statnett to supply and install substation automation systems.

The systems will be supplied to support a new power line being constructed between Ørskog and Fardal on the west coast of Norway to strengthen the grid in the region.

The order also includes the supply of protection and control systems for seven substations along the line.

ABB head of network management business Jens Birgersson said the advanced substation automation systems will help monitor, control and protect the power network, thereby improving efficiency and enhance grid reliability.

"They will also help maximize power availability and optimize maintenance costs," said Birgersson.

The company will install a MicroSCADA Pro system and electronic devices from ABB’s Relion family of protection and control devices for each of the substations between 2013 and 2015.
