Power and automation group, ABB, has won a $16m contract from Mass Global Investment Company to construct a substation and Static Var Compensator (SVC) light system for melt shop and steel rolling mill in northern Iraq.
ABB is responsible for the design, engineering, supply and commissioning of the project and the scope of supply includes 132 and 36kV switchgear with disconnector circuit breakers (DCB’s), control and protection systems, transformers and the SVC equipment.
ABB head of the Power Systems division Brice Koch said the system will increase transmission capacity to serve the needs of the steel plant and enhance grid reliability in the region.
"The solution will also improve the quality of electricity supply and efficiency of the manufacturing process," said Koch.
SVC Light is part of ABB’s FACTS (flexible alternating current transmission systems) portfolio that enhances the security, capacity and flexibility of power transmission and distribution systems, and improves productivity and power quality.
The project is scheduled for completion by 2013.
