ABB has received a contract from transmission system operator TenneT to supply a sub-sea alternating current (AC) power transmission link to connect the Sandbank offshore wind farm to the SylWin alpha offshore high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station.
According to the contract, ABB will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply and installation of the subsea cable system, including two shunt reactors on the AC platform on a turnkey basis.
The connection project will feature two three-core 155kV AC submarine cables measuring 36km in length each, and will have the capacity to transmit 288MW of clean power, which is enough to power around 300,000 German households.
The connection project, which is expected to be commissioned in 2015, will connect the AC platform of the wind farm to the HVDC converter platform of SylWin alpha. The wind farm will save 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Developer Sandbank Offshore Wind is constructing wind turbines totaling 288MW, inter array cables and an offshore substation, as part of the first construction phase.
In November 2011, Vattenfall had purchased the Sandbank offshore wind project, which is located 90km west of the island of Sylt, and had signed a contract with Siemens for the supply and installation of 80 wind turbines of 3.6MW each for the project, which was originally granted consent in 2004.
ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer said that Germany’s focus on renewable energy, coupled with the growing interest in wind energy in Europe, is fetching the company with significant opportunities.
