Alstom has inaugurated a wind tower factory in Canoas in Rio Grande do Sul State, in the southern region of Brazil.
The factory will have a capacity to manufacture 120 steel towers every year, which is enough to supply apropximately 350MW of electricity.
The Canoas factory will manufacture towers dedicated for the Corredor do Senandes complex, the first wind project of Odebrecht Energia, which will have 108MW of installed capacity.
Alstom said around 90 jobs will be created at the new facility, which is spread across 11,000m², and is expected to provide additional employment to 250 people in the region.
This is the second wind manufacturing unit in Latin America for Alstom, which has commissioned its first wind nacelle plant in Camaçari, state of Bahia, in November 2011, capable of manufacturing 600MW of wind turbines per year.
Alstom Brazil country president Marcos Costa said, "The geographical position of the plant allows us to be close to our customers and enables important interaction with other countries such as Argentina, Chile and Uruguay."
The company has recently entered into a partnership agreement with Renova Energia that could potentially generate around €1bn in orders for Alstom, through the installation of at least 1.2GW in projects.
As part of the frame agreement, the two companies have already signed a contract for 513MW.
