Portugal Environment Minister Assunção Cristas has opened Aqueva II, a new hydro plant powered by equipment from France-based Alstom.
The power project is an extension of the Alqueva I plant, located south of Evora in the vicinity of Beja, Alentejo.

Alstom supplied and installed two 130MW reversible pump turbine-generator each for the extension project, taking overall capacity of the Alqueva plant to 520MW.
Alqueva I has been in operation since 2004.
Alstom Portugal president Angelo Ramalho said: "Alqueva II project was launched by Energia de Portugal to develop power production through the effective use of Portugal’s natural resources."
In a separate release, the firm said it would supply electro-mechanical equipment for Dong Nai 5 hydropower project in Vietnam, under a contract awarded by Vinacomin Power Holding.

By GlobalDataAlstom will design, manufacture and deliver two 77MW turbine and generators and supervise implementation of the system and supplying other related equipment.
Located on the Dong Nai river, the hydropower plant is scheduled to start commercial operations in August 2015.
The latest project is part of Power Development Master Plan VII of the Vietnamese Government, and will feed the national grid with about 616GWh of electricity annually.
