Alstom T&D India has won a contract from Nabinagar Power Generating Company, a joint venture between NTPC and the Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB), to supply a power transformer package for the Nabinagar super thermal power project in India.

According to the contract, which is worth around INR1,055m (€14m), Alstom will be responsible for the design, engineering, manufacture, supply, testing, erection and commissioning of generator transformers and associated power transformers and shunt reactor.

Alstom will manufacture all the necessary equipment at its transformer manufacturing and testing facility in Naini, Uttar Pradesh, and expects to deliver the transformer package by October 2017.

Generator step-up transformers with delta-connected LV windings are powered by the generator voltage, while star-connected HV windings are connected to the transmission lines, the company claims.

Alstom T&D India managing director Rathin Basu said the company’s expertise in the field of power transformers extends through all levels, from generation to transmission (including HVDC systems) and all kinds of special industrial and railway applications.

"With strong references, Alstom T&D India has a wide range of short circuit test compliant generator transformers and associated Power Transformers designed specifically for Super Critical Power Projects," said Basu.

Earlier the Bihar Government established the 50-50 joint venture company between BSEB and NTPC to set up the 1,980MW thermal power plant at Nabinagar in district Aurangabad, Bihar at an estimated cost of INR129.6bn (€1.53bn).

Spanning across approximately 2,832 acres of land valued at an estimated INR1.73bn (€20.5m), the project will feature three units of 660MW each.

The developers have completed the topographical survey and geotechnical survey and received consent from the Water Resources Department of the Government of Bihar, to use water from Indrapuri Barrage on River Sone for the project.

BSEB will receive 75% of the output from the proposed plant under a power purchase agreement signed between the parties in January 2010.

In March 2010, the Indian Ministry of Coal accorded a coal linkage from North Karanpura Coalfields for the project, a coal requirement that is estimated at 11.25 million metric tonnes a year.
