Coal-fired Equipment

Alstom has won contracts to provide two 900MW coal-fueled units to Polska Grupa Energetyczna’s (PGE) project, which is claimed to be Poland’s largest coal-fueled facility.

Awarded by Polimex, Rafako and Mostostal Warsawa, members of the consortium responsible for the supply of the equipment for the facility, the contracts valued at €1.25bn cover the units five and six for the new ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plant in Opole, Poland.

Pursuant to the contract, the company will provide its USC technology including USC boiler islands, the steam turbine generator islands including the turbine hall equipment, the air quality control systems and some balance of plant systems.

In addition to this, Alstom will oversee overall project management and general design for the part and support the members in developing the project.

Alstom claims the USC technology burns less coal and helps generate higher electrical output, allowing the company to reduce its environmental impact and meet regulatory requirements, and help Poland reduce its dependence on coal.

The company’s factories in Elblag and Wroclaw, both in Poland, will produce core components including the steam turbines and generators.

The plant developer expects to bring the unit five into commercial operations in 2018 and unit six in 2019.

Alstom steam business senior vice-president Andreas Lusch said the company’s involvement in the PGE project and in the modernisation programme within the Polish energy sector will deliver the most environmentally advanced coal power plant in the country.

"Having broad execution experience in large-scale projects, particularly in Poland and having a strong industrial footprint in this country, we are delighted to support the Polish consortium with new local partners and suppliers in making this project a big success," said Lusch.

Prior to this, the company had supplied equipment for units two, three and four at Opole to enhance their efficiency, and completed the USC 14 at Belchatow.
