NTPC has awarded a contract to Alstom to supply environmental control equipment for the 500MW Vindyachal super thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh, India.

The contract is valued at approximately €25m.

Under the contract, Alstom will supply the wet limestone based flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system for NTPC’s 500MW pulverised coal-fired boiler unit on full turnkey basis.

In addition to this, the company will also provide designing, engineering, manufacturing, testing, civil works, erection and commissioning for the project.

The project is claimed to be the first full scope limestone based FGD for a 500MW plant in India and the fourth FGD project installation for Alstom in the country.

"The FGD will have SO2 removal efficiency of more than 90%. "

As part of the Central Pollution Control Board’s mandate to improve emission regulations from thermal power plants in the country, NTPC has decided to the install the pollution control systems for control of SO2 emissions.

Alstom India managing director and vice chairman Patrick Ledermann, said, "As the first full scope turnkey limestone-based FGD project in India, this project will be a benchmark installation in India. The FGD will have SO2 removal efficiency of more than 90% which further reaffirms our commitment towards providing clean power solutions and our growing footprint in air quality control systems."

Alstom noted that its FGD system is an effective means of preventing atmospheric pollution and removing sulphur dioxide released from coal-fired power plants.
