Amihan Energy has signed an agreement with Mudajaya and Dongturbo Electric to develop a 50MW wind power project in Cebu province.
The agreement includes an initial investment of $180m in the project, which is claimed to be the second wind energy project in the Philippines and the first in Cebu.
The project will feature wind turbines across the 18,000-hectare leased land within Cebu City, Balamban and Toledo City in the province with work set to begin in February 2014 and commissioning set for mid-2015.
Once operational, the project, which is being owned by Amihan Energy (30%), Visayan Wind Energy (30%) and Mudajaya (40%), will supply its output to the province of Cebu, including Cebu City, through Visayan Electric.
The project will be expanded up to 200MW and be combined with solar power and thus is targeted to become one of the largest integrated wind farms in the South-East Asian region, Amihan Energy chairman Jack Rodriguez told Manila Times.
The project is likely to benefit from the federal feed-in tariff (FIT) scheme, which guarantees investments for 20 years through fixed rates to firms developing renewable energy projects to promote the generation and use of such energy.
Currently, renewable energy accounts for 35% of the Philippines’s total power needs.
