The company will provide its energy solutions for the Smart Grid Gotland project, a large-scale smart grid technology demonstration on the island.

The project is a joint venture between Switzerland’s ABB, Gotland Energy, Royal Institute of Technology, Swedish National Grid, Schneider Electric and Vattenfall, and is partly financed by the Swedish Energy Agency.

Echelon will supply its Edge Control Node and Control Operating System-based application platform for the project, in addition to providing 3,000 advanced grid sensors.

Load management, outage detection, power quality monitoring and analysis, transformer monitoring and smart metering are among the first applications for Echelon’s solutions.

The Gotland project began in the fall of 2012, and is expected to run until 2015.

Echelon worldwide markets senior vice president Michael Anderson said the Smart Grid Gotland project is "the perfect way" to exhibit how a utility with a distinct plan for the future could trial new grid applications.

"Echelon is excited to play an important role in this project to help modernise Sweden’s grid and integrate new applications that will improve grid reliability, efficiency, and performance," Anderson added.

Echelon claims to have embedded its platform in over 100 million devices, 35 million households, and 300,000 buildings.

The company also said its platform powers energy savings applications for smart grids, smart cities and smart buildings.
