EDF EN Canada, a subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles, has commenced commercial operations of the 150MW Lac-Alfred Phase 2 wind power project in Quebec.

The company built the Lac-Alfred project in two phases of 150MW each in the municipalities of Saint-Cleophas, Sainte-Irene, Saint-Zenon-du-Lac-Humqui and the unorganised territory (UT) of Lac Alfred in the MRC de La Matapedia and in the municipality of La Redemption and UT Lac-a-la-Croix in the MRC de La Mitis.

Altogether, the 300MW project features a total of 150 REpower wind turbines that are made with local-manufactured blades, towers and converters. The company started construction on 150MW Lac-Alfred Phase 1 in June 2011 and commissioned it in January 2013.

The C$700m ($675m) project, which created more than 350 construction jobs and 15 permanent jobs, will sell its output to Hydro-Quebec according to 20-year power purchase agreements.

Borea Construction constructed the Lac-Alfred project, while EDF Renewable Services, an affiliate of EDF EN Canada, will provide long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) services to the project.

In November 2011, Enbridge invested approximately $330m to acquire the 50% interest in and become a co-owner of the project, which will generate enough electricity to power around 70,000 homes.

The project will significantly contribute to the growth of the Quebec economy in the form of annual lease payments of more than $1m and an average annual utility tax payment of $900,000, in addition to generating clean electricity.

EDF EN Canada vice-president of engineering and construction Benoit Rigal said that the company, together with it’s partner Enbridge, has commissioned the second phase of the Lac-Alfred wind power project and attributed this success to local populace.

"Bringing all 300 megawatts of Lac-Alfred to completion ahead of schedule is a result of outstanding efforts by REpower, Borea and our EDF EN Canada team who worked together to overcome challenges due to a complex site.

"The entire team performed with professional diligence, always putting safety first while maintaining respect of the environment," Rigal said.
