Enel Green Power (EGP) has started operations at its 17MW Rancia 2 geothermal plant in Tuscany, Italy.

The plant will be able to generate about 150mKW hours of power, saving the equivilent of 100,000t of CO2.

Rancia 2 was refurbished as part of a €500m industrial plan for the development of geothermal energy in Tuscany.

Enel Green Power CEO, Francesco Starace, said: "These works show our commitment to the continuous search for the improvement of the existing power fleet whereas, at the same time, we maintain our involvement in further increasing our generation capacity globally by putting new plants into operation."

Work is currently in progress on on the Rancia 1 and Le Prata plants, located in the towns of Radicondoli, Siena and Castelnuovo VC, Pisa, Italy.
