Energy UK has launched new smart meter guidelines aimed at protecting customers during the smart metering roll-out programme between now and 2020.
The Smart Meter Installation Code of Practice (SMICoP) and Smart Meter Data Guide have been launched to build customer confidence.
The code of practice specifies the minimum standards that energy suppliers have to follow at the time of installing smart meters in their customers’ homes.
SMICoP also insists smart meter installers should offer customers energy efficiency advice and bans them from attempting any additional sales activities during the installation.
On the other hand, the Smart Meter Data Guide intends to educate customers about their rights and choices when they get a smart meter installed.
The data guide outlines what information energy suppliers can access, and how the data can be used.
Energy UK said that the commitment of no sales at the installation visit will ensure that customers do not face any pressure to take out new products or services at the point of installation.
Energy UK chief operating officer Lawrence Slade said the guidelines are designed to ensure customers have a positive experience when their smart meters are installed.
"The rules are there to contribute to a smooth and successful roll-out of smart meters across the country," Slade said.
The guidelines were prepared by Energy UK in consultation with its members, Consumer Futures, and a number of other stakeholders.
