Gamesa has signed an agreement with Iberdrola Renewables to supply wind turbines for the 202MW Baffin wind farm project, an expansion at the Penascal wind power complex in Texas.
According to the agreement, set to begin in mid-2014, Gamesa will supply, install and commission 101 G97 wind turbines of 2MW each for the project, construction of which is estimated to cost around $400m.

Subject to approval from the local government, the project is likely to create up to 240 construction jobs and eight new direct jobs for operation and maintenance, significantly boosting the local economy. Iberdrola can use Gamesa turbines at other possible US sites if it fails to get approval for the project.
Once operational by the end of 2014, the Baffin project will increase the Penascal complex’s total capacity from the current 404MW to 606MW, making Iberdrola’s largest renewable energy facility in the world.
Located in Kenedy County, the complex is likely to generate enough electricity to power 210,000 households and curb 850,000t of CO2 emissions annually.
The 404MW complex, which started operations in June 2010, is comprised of two wind farms, Penascal I and Penascal II, featuring a total of 168 Mitsubishi MHI 92 wind turbines of 2.4MW each.
