Gamesa has won a tender for turnkey construction of the 220MW Gulf of El Zayt wind farm in Egypt.

The tender has been awarded to the Spanish power manufacturer by the New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) of Egypt.

The wind project is situated along the Red Sea coast and will be financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

"Gamesa will deliver, install and commission 110 of its G80-2.0MW turbines at the facility."

Under the new deal, Gamesa will deliver, install and commission 110 of its G80-2.0MW turbines at the facility, starting in September.

Commissioning of the renewable energy generating facility is likely to be done during the latter half of 2017.

Gamesa will also be responsible for setting up the civil engineering and electric infrastructure for the plant and will be handling its operations and maintenance services for three years.

Gamesa Europe and RoW CEO Ricardo Chocarro said: "The fact that Gamesa was selected for this project, for which all the major global OEMs bid, evidences yet again our products’ tremendous competitiveness."

The project is in accordance with Egypt’s intention to meet 20% of its power requirements from renewable resources by 2020.

The Spanish firm, which entered Egypt in 2004, maintains an installed capacity of over 600MW in the country. In addition, Gamesa offers operation and maintenance services for power plants of around 500MW.
