Geronimo Energy has signed two renewable energy purchase agreements with Xcel Energy to buy 400MW of wind energy, which will be generated from two wind farms in the US.
The 200MW Courtenay Wind Farm is located in Stutsman County, North Dakota, while the 200MW Odell Wind Farm is situated in Jackson, Watonwan and Cottonwood counties in Minnesota.
Courtenay Wind Farm will feature 125 turbines and will be built across 25,000 acres of land, while the Odell Wind Farm will also include 125 turbines and will be constructed across 34,000 acres of land.
The energy generated from both the wind farms will power approximately 60,000 homes in the respective regions.
Geronimo Wind Energy president Blake Nixon said both the wind farms will bring better economic benefits to the local residents and communities in which they are located.
Xcel Energy’s Northern States Power unit president and CEO Dave Sparby said the power purchase agreements will help the company reduce energy costs for its customers, enhance fuel diversity in its portfolio and further reduce carbon emissions.
"We’re proposing to add substantial amounts of wind power now to take advantage of very attractive prices for our customers that resulted from Congress’ extension of the federal renewable electricity Production Tax Credit," Sparby said.
In July 2011, Geronimo Wind Energy signed a renewable energy purchase agreement with Xcel Energy to buy 200MW of wind energy from its Prairie Rose Wind Farm in the US.
