Jacobs Engineering Group has won a strategic framework contract from Horizon Nuclear Power, a subsidiary of Hitachi, to provide engineering and related technical services for its two nuclear power plants being built in the UK.

The company is developing new nuclear power plants totalling at least 5,400MW at Wylfa on the Isle of Anglesey and Oldbury-on-Severn in South Gloucestershire.

The latest contract follows three other strategic contracts awarded by the company to the three UK-based companies AMEC, Atkins and Cavendish Nuclear in early December 2013 for the provision of engineering and related technical services.

"The four suppliers and their supply chains will work with Horizon Nuclear Power for the next three years on consultancy and technical design activities for the proposed Wylfa Newydd nuclear power plant."

As part of these strategic contracts, the four suppliers and their supply chains will work with Horizon Nuclear Power for the next three years on consultancy and technical design activities for the proposed Wylfa Newydd nuclear power plant.

Horizon COO Alan Raymant said that the company selected Jacobs as its fourth and final framework partner for is nuclear power stations.

"We look forward to working with our new strategic suppliers and their supply chains, as we gather momentum and continue to progress our detailed plans ahead of our first formal public consultation next year," said Raymant.

The 2,700MW Wylfa Newydd plant, which is expected to obtain the full range of licences and permissions and start main construction activities by 2018, will generate enough clean energy to power up to three million homes.

Commercial operations of the Wylfa Newydd plant is expected to start in the first half of the 2020s, subject to timing of the final investment decision and detailed construction programme.

The Wylfa plant will include two units featuring the advanced boiling water reactor (ABWR) technology that will be provided by Hitachi GE Nuclear Energy.

The latest award represents the completion of the selection of strategic framework partners and all the partners have been selected, based on their expertise, value for money criteria and alignment with Horizon’s company values, in a competitive tendering process.

The UK HM Treasury will support the financing of the project development through a UK Guarantee Scheme that is subject to final due diligence and ministerial approval.
