Spanish renewable energy company Iberdrola has launched the iGREENGrid project, which will study the impact of integrating renewable energies on grids over three years.
Under the EU’s 7th Framework Programme for Research, the project will combine and coordinate field research efforts in Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain.
The goal of the €6.5m project is to study the stability, reliability and quality of supply in power distribution grids in the context of mass-scale penetration of renewable energies.
The iGREENGrid project will eventually define and pool procedures, technological advances and best practices that should help to increase the capacity of grids to receive electricity from renewable energy sources.
Participants in the project includes German conglomerate RWE; France-based ERDF; Italy’s ENEL and RSE; Spain-based Gas Natural Fenosa and TECNALIA and Austria’s AIT, SALZBURG and ENERGY AG NETZ.
In Spain, the PRICE initiative has been chosen as the pilot project, which involves the roll-out of smart grids in the Corredor de Henares region, and is expected to benefit over 500,000 people.
Iberdrola heads the project along with Gas Natural Fenosa, and there are 22 other participating partners, including Red Eléctrica de España and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
