Iran has generated 203,052GWh of electricity from 20 March 2012 until 1 January 2013, a 5.84% increase in electricity production compared with the same period a year ago.
Out of the total production, the output of thermal and hydroelectric power plants accounted for 193,302.9GWh and 9,749.5GWh, respectively, according to Iranian news agency IRNA.
Currently, the Islamic republic’s installed power generation capacity is nearly 67GW per day.
The energy ministry of Iran is planning to increase the power generation capacity by 5GW by 20 March 2013.
Iran Power Plant Projects Management Company managing director Abbas Aliabadi was quoted by Trend as saying that the nation needs to come up with ways to make the electricity production process cheaper.
Aliabadi also noted that electricity is vital for Iran’s development, and fuel is the key factor in power generation.

"Currently Iran uses coal for generating 40-43 percent of its electricity and will continue this process until 2040," Aliabadi added.
In order to diversify needed fuels the country calls for investment in various power-related projects such as gas-fired, combined cycle, hydroelectric and wind.
During the first nine months of the current Iranian calendar, the country has exported over 8,534GWh of electricity to the neighbouring countries.
