UK-based infrastructure developer John Laing has acquired the Svartvallsberget wind farm in Sweden.
The acquisition marks John Laing’s first overseas project in the onshore wind sector.
The company will design, build, fund and operate 10 turbines at the Svartvallsberget project, each with 2MW capacity.
The project, expected to start in 2014, will produce enough electricity to power 12,500 homes and offset nearly 21,000t of CO2 emissions per year.
John Laing renewable energy head Ross McArthur said the acquisition represents a major milestone in the development of the company’s business in the renewable energy sector.
John Laing business development for continental Europe head Andreas Parzych added; "This is an exciting project for John Laing as the skills and experience we have obtained so far in the renewable energy sector has allowed us to expand into Northern Europe, making Svartvallsberget Wind Farm John Laing’s first project in Sweden."
Sweden is planning to generate half of its energy from renewables by 2020, up from 47% from the current plan, reports Bloomberg.
John Laing intends to build a portfolio of renewable energy assets throughout the UK, northern Europe and in other regions where it currently operates.
