There has been a sudden power outage reported throughout Syria amid a two-week truce between the country’s government and rebel forces.

Although several outages have occurred previously, this blackout is significant because the entire nation has been affected, according to media reports.

The Syrian Ministry of Electricity said that the department is working to identify the reason and restore electricity supply, Syrian Arab News Agency reported.

"Engineers and technicians are working on finding out why this sudden power cut happened in order to fix it promptly and restore electricity in the next few hours."

Prior to power outage reports, the ministry stated on its Facebook page that a power generating facility in the western city of Hama was attacked by militants.

However, the government did not mention if a militant attack caused the nationwide blackout, reported CNN.

A source at the ministry was quoted by the agency as saying: "Engineers and technicians are working on finding out why this sudden power cut happened in order to fix it promptly and restore electricity in the next few hours."

Following a partial outage due to damage to one of the network hubs, internet services resumed to all provinces, the news agency reported citing Syrian Telecommunication Establishment.

Meanwhile, reports emerged that electrical workers have ‘determined the cause and began restoring power to some places’.

Further details of what had gone wrong remain undisclosed. Several cities in the ISIS and militants groups controlled areas use fuel-powered generators for electricity.
