Sakhalin Energy has commissioned power generation train No.4, which is equipped with three General Electric (GE) LM6000 PF Sprint aero-derivative gas turbines of 46.4MWt each, at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk combined heat and power plant in Russia.
Executed under ‘Far East and Trans-Baikal Economic and Social Development for the Period until 2013’ federal target program and ‘Electrical Power Industry Development for the Period until 2010 and Long-Term Development until 2020’ regional target program, the gas turbines will be used with waste heat recovery boilers in the train No.4 to increase electrical power and heat output.

GE manufactured the equipment in March 2012 and delivered it to Sakhalin in May 2013, while SK Energostroy started the installation of the GE equipment at the plant in June 2012 that has now been commissioned.
GE president and CEO in Russia Ron Pollet said that the company has significantly contributed to Sakhalin Island’s infrastructure modernisation program and together with Block 5, which was inaugurated in 2012 with GE technology, will enable the Island to achieve energy security in the future.
Earlier, GE had already supplied its two LM6000 PD Sprint gas turbine units totalling 91.2MWt capacity for power generation train No.5 of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (CPP-1), which was commissioned in August 2012 and with the train No.4 commissioning, the total output of GE equipment at the plant reaches 230.2MWt.
The commissioning of new units is part of the reconstruction project that calls for switching the existing five coal-fired boilers at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to natural gas.
