Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Energy Group have closed financing for the 150MW Grand Renewable wind project in Haldimand County, Ontario.
The project will feature 67 2.3MW Siemens wind turbines that will be all Ontario-made, step-up transformers, electrical collector lines, a transmission line, transformer substation, turbine access roads and construction staging areas.
Siemens will produce the blades for the project at its facility in Tillsonburg, while CS Wind will manufacture turbine towers using Ontario-made steel at its facility in Windsor.
The transmission part of the project will require construction and operation of the transmission line, together with interconnection facilities (substations) and other related facilities, linking the wind energy facility with power grid.
Samsung C&T Canada was selected as an EPC contractor and will be responsible for building the project, with construction likely to begin shortly and complete in the the third quarter of 2014. The project will generate enough clean electricity to power around 50,000 Ontario homes annually.
The project will create 1,000 jobs across Ontario and the workers will be involved in various stages from manufacture and assembly of the wind turbine components to site construction, installation work and operations of the project.
The project will sell its output to the Ontario Power Authority under a power purchase agreement. It will invest $4m annually on project operations, supporting the local economy, and alsol contribute $10m to a Community Vibrancy Fund for 20 years to support community initiatives.
On 15 June 2012, the Canadian Ministry of Environment has issued a renewable energy approval to the project, which is accompanied with the company’s 100MW Grand Renewable Solar, and both projects will provide a combined capacity of 250MW of renewable energy in Ontario.
Samsung C&T executive vice-president KJ Kim said that Samsung is working with the community and its Six Nations partners to successfully execute construction of the project.
"The Grand Renewable Wind project, along with our other projects in the province, is creating thousands of high-skilled jobs that will benefit real people in this community and across Ontario," Kim said
