Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE Transmission) has awarded four contracts worth about £600m ($918m) to four consortiums, for the construction of electricity substations in Scotland.
A consortium of ABB and Balfour Beatty Engineering Services has been selected to develop substations in Caithness and Sutherland, while Alstom Grid UK and Enterprise Utility Services will construct substations on the east coast, including Aberdeen.
The contract for Moray and West has been awarded to a consortium of Bam Nuttall and Siemens Transmission & Development; and a fourth award has been made to Miller Quatro, which will develop substations in the north of Scotland.
Miller Quatro is a consortium of Miller Construction and three Spanish companies – Sacyr Industrial, Isastur and Aditel, known collectively as Quatro T&D.
The projects are part of SHE Transmission’s £1.1bn investment programme to upgrade and renew the transmission network in the region.
SSE director of transmission David Gardner said: "The award of these contracts, with some of the industry’s global experts, will help deliver the infrastructure that is needed to support the connection of renewables, as well as providing a boost to the local communities where we are operating."
The company’s investment programme has the option to increase by £4bn if required.
To date, more than 2,600MW of renewable energy has been connected in the SHE Transmission licensed area.
