Siemens has won a contract from Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Energy Group for the Grand Renewable wind project, located in the county of Haldimand in southern Ontario.
According to the contract, Siemens will supply and commission 67 SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines totalling 150MW and provide service and maintenance for three years for the project
Siemens will manufacture 49m wind turbine blades for the project at its facility in Tillsonburg, Ontario and will source towers and steel for the turbines from CS Wind in Windsor and Essar in Sault Ste. Marie.
Siemens Canada wind power vice-president Jacob Andersen said the company has partnered in the wind project, which will significantly contribute to the Green Energy Act and Green Energy Investment Agreement.
In September 2013, Samsung and Pattern Energy had completed financing for the wind project, construction of which is likely to begin shortly and expected to be complete in late 2014.
The wind project will support the local economy with more than $4m in direct annual spending of project operations, and create more than 1,000 jobs from across Ontario in the phases covering manufacture and assembly of the wind turbine components to site construction, installation work and project operations.
The project, which will produce enough clean energy to power around 50,000 Ontario homes annually, is part of the 250MW Grand Renewable Energy Park, which is being built and operated by Samsung C&T.
The renewable energy park, which received renewable energy approval from the Ministry of the Environment on 15 June 2012, will also feature the 100MW Grand Renewable solar project, along with the wind project.
The solar project will feature around 425,000 solar PV panels, consisting of 100 1MW transformers and 200 inverters of 500kW each; a transformer substation consisting of a solar transformer (65/86/108MVA); and associated ancillary equipment, systems and technologies including on-site access roads, switchgear, control and monitoring equipment and underground cabling.
