Siemens Energy has won a ten-year contract from CITIC Pacific Mining Management to perform service and maintenance at the 450MW Sino Iron power station located at Cape Preston in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

Under the contract, which is claimed to be the company’s largest service order for its SGT-800 gas turbine, Siemens will be responsible for preventative maintenance, remote monitoring, parts supply, and field service and help ensure predictable reliability and maintenance costs for the SGT-800 units at the project.

The plant will feature seven gas turbines of up to 47MW each, six HRSG (heat recovery steam generator) boilers and three steam turbines of up to 58MW each.

The equipment is being arranged in three blocks, each containing two gas turbines, two HRSGs and one steam turbine in a combined cycle, plus one gas turbine operating separately in an open cycle.

The HRSGs capture waste heat from the gas turbines and use the energy to boil water into steam, which drives the steam turbine and, in turn, drives another generator to produce electricity.

"The plant will provide the electricity needed to power the largest magnetite iron ore mining and processing operation in Australia."

The gas turbines will be anchored by concrete foundations and their shaft and blade components rotate up to 6,600 times each minute, CITIC Pacific claims.

Once operational, the plant will produce about 40% less carbon emissions compared to a conventional open-cycle plant and generate enough electricity to power around 280,000 homes annually.

The plant will provide the electricity needed to power the largest magnetite iron ore mining and processing operation in Australia.

Siemens Energy Service Division CEO Randy Zwirn said the latest contract, which is largest service order ever received for its SGT-800 gas turbine business, will strengthen its growth as a major service provider for oil and gas applications.
