A joint venture between global manufacturer SPX and Shanghai Electric has received new orders worth over $80m to provide dry cooling systems for four power plants in China.

The new JV, Shanghai Electric – SPX Engineering & Technologies (SEC-SPX JV), will provide air cooled condensers (ACC) to the Hami and Tianshan power plants in the country.

The partnership will also provide an indirect dry cooling tower (IDCT) to the Guojin power plant, and an indirect natural draft cooling system to the Junzheng Wuhai coal-fired power plant.

"Our goal is to deliver dry cooling products and services that help generate reliable power supplies through our joint venture with Shanghai Electric."

SPX Cooling Technologies (Zhangjiakou) will manufacture the ACC and IDCT bundles for the cooling towers.

SPX segment president Gene Lowe said the new orders highlighted the demand for SPX’s thermal products and services in China.

"As China’s energy infrastructure continues to expand, our goal is to deliver dry cooling products and services that help generate reliable power supplies through our joint venture with Shanghai Electric."

Located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Hami plant is a 2x660MW coal-fired power plant.

As per the deal, the JV will supply a whole ACC island, including two 8×8 modules for the plant.

The 2x350MW coal-fired power Tianshan plant is also located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and will receive a whole ACC island, including two 6×5 modules from the JV.

Both plants are expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2014.

SEC-SPX JV will provide an IDCT with multi-channel tubes (MCT) to the 2x350MW coal-fired Guojin power plant, including two 164 Mega-Delta units in one tower.

Located in the Shanxi Province, the Guojin plant is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2015.

The JV will also provide an indirect natural draft cooling system to the Junzheng Wuhai coal-fired power plant.

The system will feature one natural draft dry cooling tower, equipped with heat exchange bundles using aluminum round-finned tubes to serve the power plant’s two 330MW units.
