Norway-based renewable energy firm Statkraft has opened the 430MW Knapsack II combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Hürth, Germany.
Located in the Knapsack Chemical Industrial Park in Hürth near Cologne, the power plant is Statkraft’s second CCGT facility at the site.
The new power plant, which was built by Siemens Energy, has the capacity to provide electricity for 500,000 homes in the region.
Siemens delivered the main components for the plant, including a SGT5-4000F gas turbine, a SST5-3000 steam turbine and a SGen5-2000H generator.
The company has also provided a heat recovery steam generator and electrical engineering, as well as the SPPA-T3000 control system.
The power plant is a single-shaft unit in which the gas and steam turbines are arranged on one shaft and drive the same generator.
Siemens Energy gas turbine power plant solutions head Lothar Balling said due to the plant’s high efficiency, the CO2 and nitrogen oxide emissions are low.
"In addition, when in hot-start mode, the power plant can be run up to full load in just a few minutes and thereby compensate for fluctuations in electricity generated by wind turbines and solar stations," Balling added.
Statkraft has been operating a gas and steam turbine power plant with 800MW capacity at the same site since 2007.
Statkraft project development head Horst Kesselmeier said the new CCGT will support the production of renewable energies with environmentally friendly gas power.
