Sarawak Energy has signed an agreement with a joint venture (JV) of Toshiba Transmission & Distribution System Asia (TTDA) and Xian Electric Engineering for the 500kV transmission backbone project, extending more than 500km from Similajau in Bintulu to Tondong in Kuching, Malaysia.
The project, which is scheduled for completion in stages from December 2015 to June 2016, will support the potential development of the company’s generating system and provide a secure supply to the growing Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) customers.
The company has awarded the two packages worth RM432m (€98.8m) (Package A and Package 2) of the 500kV high voltage transmission backbone project to Toshiba TTDA and Xian following a strict tendering process.
The two packages are for the Similajau-Mapai 500kV transmission line and the Mapai-Oya 275kV transmission line, which are part of the six contract packages of the entire project.
Sarawak Energy CEO Datuk Torstein said the JV has presented the best bid in assuring the company that maximum value to the state would be achieved while ensuring best quality in delivery and execution.
"Our procurement and project execution teams have meticulously evaluated the bidders and following a stringent tender and evaluation process, we believe the best team has won," said Torstein.
In August 2013, Sarawak Energy has announced its intention to award six contract packages worth a total of RMB1.2bn (€274.6m) for the project to combinations of qualified international and local contractors.
Out of the total, two packages for the Mapai-Lachau 500kV transmission line and the Lachau-Tondong 500kV transmission line are being awarded to a JV of Sinohydro Corporation and Trenergy Infrastructure.
The remaining packages are the Mambong and Entinggan 275kV substation extension and Mapai 275/33kV substation project, which are being awarded to KEC International and Pestech, respectively.
