Notably, the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications in the power industry was 1,640 in Q2 2024, versus 2,517 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 44% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that State Grid Corporation of China filed the most artificial intelligence patents within the power industry in Q2 2024. The company filed 403 artificial intelligence-related patents in the quarter, compared with 712 in the previous quarter. It was followed by China Southern Power Grid with 233 artificial intelligence patent filings, Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute (35 filings), and Korea Electric Power (31 filings) in Q2 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with an 81% share of total patent filings
The largest share of artificial intelligence related patent filings in the power industry in Q2 2024 was in China with 81%, followed by the US (8%) and Japan (0.67%). The share represented by China was 7% lower than the 88% share it accounted for in Q1 2024.
