The system comprises an upwardly canister with an interior chamber for the waste, a lower confinement lid detachably coupled to an upper shielded lifting lid forming a self-supporting lid assembly, and an outer overpack where the canister is inserted. The lid assembly sits atop the overpack, with the shielded lifting lid engaging the annular rim of the overpack while the confinement lid does not. The system includes assembly bolts for attaching the shielded lifting lid to the confinement lid and confinement lid mounting bolts for securing the confinement lid to the canister without engaging the shielded lifting lid.
Furthermore, the patented system features a vertically adjustable basket insert within the canister to support radioactive waste cylinders. The shielded lifting lid, with a larger diameter and greater thickness than the confinement lid, includes a lifting lug for hoisting the lid assembly. The confinement lid mounting bolts are designed to have their heads recessed within the first bolt holes of the shielded lifting lid, ensuring a secure attachment to the canister.
