Description

The project is being developed by Geothermal Development, Globeleq Africa, Orpower 22 and Sosian Menengai Geothermal Power. British International Investment, Civicon, Geothermal Development, Norfund, Ormat Technologies, Sosian Menengai Geothermal Power and Symbion Power are currently owning the project.

The geothermal site has in total 27 number of wells. All of them will be production wells.

The project is expected to supply enough clean energy to power 500,000 households.

Development status

Post completion of the construction, the project is expected to get commissioned in October 2020.

Power purchase agreement

The power generated from the Menengai Geothermal Power Plant (Menengai Phase I Unit I) will be sold to Kenya Power and Lighting under a power purchase agreement for a period of 25 years. The offtake capacity is expected to be 35MW.

The power generated from the Menengai Geothermal Power Plant (Menengai Phase I Unit II) will be sold to Kenya Power and Lighting under a power purchase agreement. The offtake capacity is expected to be 35MW.

The power generated from the Menengai Geothermal Power Plant (Menengai Phase I Unit III) will be sold to Kenya Power and Lighting under a power purchase agreement. The offtake capacity is expected to be 35MW.

Contractors involved

China Machinery Engineering is expected to render engineering procurement construction services for the Menengai Geothermal Power Plant (Menengai Phase I Unit III) project. Kaishan Group is expected to render engineering procurement construction services for the Menengai Geothermal Power Plant (Menengai Phase I Unit III) project. Toyota Tsusho is expected to render engineering procurement construction services for the Menengai Geothermal Power Plant (Menengai Phase I Unit II) project.

Menengai Geothermal Power Plant (Menengai Phase I Unit II) will be equipped with Fuji Electric turbine. The phase consists of 1 turbine with 35MW nameplate capacity.

Globeleq Africa, Kaishan Group, Orpower 22 and Sosian Menengai Geothermal Power are expected to be contracted for rendering of operations & maintenance services for the project.Geothermal Development, is likely to be the steam raising contractor for the project.
