Mexico’s National Energy Control Center (Cenace) has blocked grid connection of new solar and wind projects to ensure energy security in the wake of the coronavirus health crisis. CENACE said: “The intermittent generation from wind and PV plants affects the reliability of the national electricity system, [impacting] the sufficiency, quality and continuity of power supply.” It added that these technologies “do not contribute” to system regulation or grid inertia.

DTE Energy has introduced extended maintenance shutdown at its Fermi 2 nuclear plant due to the outbreak of coronavirus among its employees. To ensure the safety of the plant, crews who maintain the facility in its current state remained on the job through the weekend. DTE said: “The safety stand-down allowed the site to conduct newly available novel coronavirus testing for regular and contractor employees at the facility.”
The Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority has put brakes on the country’s solar sector by deferring part of the licensing process for net metering applications. Monthly meetings of the committee, which carry out technical evaluations of net metering applications, have been suspended by the regulator due to concerns over the spread of coronavirus.
Russian state nuclear company Rosatom has said that the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic may spread to the country’s three nuclear cities, including one that is home to a top-secret research institute. Rosatom chief Alexei Likhachev said: “This [pandemic] creates a direct threat to our nuclear towns. The situation in Sarov, Elektrostal, Desnogorsk is today particularly alarming.”
