Government-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) in India has begun commercial operations at its 800MW coal-based supercritical thermal power plant.
The first unit was produced for the 2x800MW Yeramarus thermal power station of Raichur Power (RPCL) in the state of Karnataka. With production of the first commercial power unit, equipment manufacturer BHEL has now entered into the field of power generation.

Karnataka Power (KPCL) and BHEL are the main equity partners of RPCL, the owner and operator of this power plant. BHEL is responsible for design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection, and commissioning of the modern supercritical project.
The company also supplied critical equipment such as, a boiler, turbines and generators, electrical equipment, key packages of balance-of-plant, and associated civil works.
BHEL also manufactured major equipment at its plants in Haridwar, Trichy, Bhopal, Ranipet, Hyderabad, Jhansi, Thirumayam, and Bengaluru.
Construction of this new plant was undertaken by the company's power sector, Southern Region.

By GlobalDataBHEL is reported to have supplied and executed 4,010MW of coal-based sets for KPCL and its joint ventures, which account for 95% of the utility’s coal-based installed capacity.
