South Korean company LG CNS has won a contract from Canadian Solar to construct a 55MW plant in Shin Mine of Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan.
The KRW170bn ($142.3m) solar project will last around 18 months, with commercial operation expected to start in May, 2018.

Prior to signing the contract, Canadian Solar checked the sites where LG CNS has finished construction in Japan.
LG CNS’s new energy business executive director Ha Tae-seok said: “This Shin Mine Solarpower Plant Project will become a solid foundation for expanding our business in Japan, which is a difficult place for foreign companies to advance into, and we will expand our overseas energy business through close cooperation with global partners, while developing eco-friendly energy business in Japan.”
Last year, the company finished the construction of the Shimane (10MW) and Tojo (33MW) solarpower plants in Japan, which are currently under commercial operation.
LG CNS is looking to diversify its energy business beyond solarpower plants on land to floating solar and windpower plants. Meanwhile, with plans to respond to the changes in the market and business environment for next year, the company has reshuffled its organisation and created a smart energy division to take charge of energy, signage, and smart building business.
